Captain James ReifJim became a member of the Upper Darby Police Department as a sworn officer in 1988 and attended the Pennsylvania State Police Academy. Jim was promoted to Sergeant in 1995, Lieutenant in 2013, and to his current rank as Captain in 2016. Captain Reif is currently the Commanding Officer of the Patrol Division and the Professional Standards Unit. He also oversees the Mountain Bike Unit and the Honor Guard Unit. Captain Reif has served in various capacities within the police department over the past 29 years. In addition to Patrol and Detective assignments, Jim has worked in the Narcotics, SWAT, Mountain Bike, and Anti-Graffiti units. In 1995, Jim founded the Upper Darby Police Mountain Bike Unit. This unit has turned into a great success for the police department and has had a positive impact on the lives of young people in the Upper Darby community. Captain Reif supervised the Mountain Bike Unit as Sergeant for 18 years before being promoted to Lieutenant. In 1997, Jim was certified as a Police Cyclist Instructor by the International Police Mountain Bike Association and has trained over 400 police bicycle officers from the Tri-State area and beyond. With the help and support of Superintendent Michael Chitwood, in 2007 Jim created the Upper Darby Police 5th Grade Mentoring Program. This effort is a partnership with the Upper Darby School District where officers volunteer to mentor a 5th grade class in each elementary school in the township. Today, 40 Upper Darby Officers are mentors to over 900 students in 5th grade classrooms in all public, private, and parochial schools in Upper Darby. Captain Reif is also the Safe Schools Coordinator for Upper Darby Township, overseeing lockdown training, drills for the police department and all 19 public, private, and parochial schools in the township.

Jim has been married to Florence for over 25 years and they reside in the Drexel Hill section of Upper Darby Township. They have three children: Domenic 25, Elizabeth 22, and Thomas 18, with all three of his children attending Upper Darby Senior High School. Captain Reif was raised in both Clifton Heights and the Penn Pines section of Upper Darby, attending Clifton Heights Elementary School, Clifton Height Jr. High School, and Beverly Hills Jr High School.  He is a 1980 graduate of Upper Darby Senior High School where he was active in the marching band, orchestra and lacrosse. Jim enlisted in the United States Navy after graduation, serving on the guided missile destroyer USS Luce, based out of Mayport, FL., rising to the rank of 2nd class Petty Officer.

Captain Reif earned an Associate’s Degree in Emergency Management and Planning from Delaware County Community College and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Safety Administration from Neumann University where Jim was the recipient of the Outstanding Senior Award presented by the Neumann University Alumni Association. Because of Jim’s dedication to the Upper Darby community and school district, in 2010 Jim was inducted into the Drexel Hill Middle School Wall of Heroes. In 2013, Jim was also inducted into the Upper Darby Senior High School Wall of Fame.

In his spare time, Jim is a NCAA Division 1 football official, refereeing college football games for the American Athletic Conference. He is also on the Upper Darby High School varsity baseball coaching staff, a member of the Nicole Gallo Memorial 5K Run committee at Bonner/Prendie High School, a member of the Tyson/Mendenhall scholarship committee at Upper Darby HS, a member of the Upper Darby Arts & Education foundation Alumni committee, and the tournament director for the Drexel Hill Raiders youth Wrestling tournament.
