Officer McNamara Pin  Officer Dennis McNamara Badge #121
Officer McNamara, badge #121Shortly after overnight roll call on Wednesday, January 30, 2002, the 4th Platoon of the Upper Darby Township Police Patrol Division started its shift in a terrible mix of rain and snow.  Officer Dennis McNamara, badge #121, a 10-year veteran, was assigned car 79-21.  Less than 15 minutes into his tour, Dennis was investigating a parked and occupied suspicious vehicle on the 6700 block of Perry Avenue in the Cardington Section of the Township.  As it turns out, Dennis was unaware that he was investigating a career-criminal that was heavily armed and had sworn that he would kill to prevent going back to jail.

While the details of how Dennis died have often been discussed, what is sometimes lost in the conversation is how Dennis lived.  He was hopelessly devoted to his wife Diane, his children, Melissa and Spike, his community, his country, and his profession.  Now absent from the police department is a man who was a great friend, co-worker, and example for others.  Dennis is sorely missed and will always be remembered.  Shortly before he died, Dennis McNamara, the poet, began a new writing.  Its title is a vivid description of what many of us felt at the time.  He never had a chance to finish it, but it is uniquely his.

“Days Unraveled”

My world began to move slower today, I don’t know
When I lost it: my expertise on life.
I don’t know when I lost touch with your soul.
Everything moves too slowly now.
I once thought our consciousness could live looking down
On the trees, the mountains, the streams…

Comments:I got to service in the Army Reserve over in Camden NJ. He was a good guy. I got to meet Mack 15 year ago when I was doing work for PECO. I got to serve with him right before he died.

Comments:The memories of that evening are forever etched in my mind. The type of cop you were evident—a cop who could take an improperly affixed license plate and turn it into a 250,000 cash seizure. My hope is that those that did not know you do not go uneducated about the kind of man you were.

Comments:I served with Mac in the Camden Reserve Center on Federal St. I didnt know him outside of the Military but he was obviously dedicated to keeping people safe and fighting for the lberties of this country. He is a fellow brother in Blue, as well as in Green, and will be missed. We all understand the greatness and selflessnes of sacrifice we may all have to pay to protect our rights. God has a special grace for Police Officers. Rest well Brother.

Comments:I've heard much about this officer, what a officer he was. All officers in UD deserve to be recognized for their everyday hard work on keeping our community safe. Every-time my friend and I see his car we always wave to his partner that still is on the force today

Comments:I remember your dedication and desire to do the job. Some may not recognize that you may have saved someone else’s life due to your actions that night. You are owed something for that. Those that remember you should appreciate their families, their jobs, and their lives that much more because of your sacrifice. 49-W-23
